Background of the Study :
Community support plays a pivotal role in the successful implementation and sustainability of physical education programs in primary schools. In Sokoto North Local Government Area, the integration of community resources and active parental involvement has been recognized as a critical factor in enhancing the overall quality of physical education. The involvement of community stakeholders, including local organizations, parents, and sports clubs, contributes significantly to the availability of resources, encouragement of student participation, and the development of effective physical education curricula (Abubakar, 2023). Recent research emphasizes that community engagement fosters an environment where physical education is not viewed solely as a school-based activity but as a collaborative effort that benefits overall child development (Ibrahim, 2024). In Sokoto North, community support extends beyond financial contributions to include volunteer coaching, the maintenance of sports facilities, and advocacy for policy changes that prioritize physical education. These multifaceted contributions are critical for promoting regular physical activity among young learners and for instilling lifelong healthy habits. However, despite the potential benefits, there are challenges in mobilizing and sustaining community support. Differences in socio-economic status, cultural perceptions regarding physical education, and limited awareness about the long-term benefits of sports participation have been identified as barriers (Sani, 2025). Furthermore, the absence of a structured framework for community involvement often results in sporadic and unsustained support efforts. This study seeks to appraise the level of community support for physical education programs in primary schools in Sokoto North, investigating the nature, extent, and impact of such support on program effectiveness. By analyzing community contributions and stakeholder perspectives, the study aims to identify the factors that facilitate or hinder effective community engagement. The findings will be instrumental in developing strategies to strengthen community ties and enhance the overall delivery of physical education programs in the region (Ibrahim, 2024).
Statement of the Problem :
Despite the recognized importance of community support in enhancing physical education programs, primary schools in Sokoto North face challenges in sustaining active community involvement. There is evidence that while sporadic support exists, the lack of a coordinated and continuous effort undermines the overall effectiveness of physical education initiatives. Inadequate communication between school authorities and community stakeholders, coupled with limited awareness of the benefits of physical education, often results in low levels of sustained engagement. Moreover, financial constraints and cultural attitudes towards sports participation further compound these challenges (Sani, 2025). Schools report difficulties in organizing community-led activities and maintaining sports facilities, which directly affects students’ access to quality physical education. The inconsistent involvement of community members creates gaps in program delivery and limits the opportunities for students to develop essential motor skills and physical fitness. In addition, the absence of formal structures to facilitate community support often leads to missed opportunities for resource mobilization and partnership building. This study aims to systematically assess the extent and nature of community support for physical education programs in Sokoto North, identifying the key challenges and proposing recommendations to foster more effective engagement. By addressing these issues, the research intends to contribute to the improvement of physical education practices and the overall well-being of primary school students in the area (Abubakar, 2023).
